Many people who use flannel bedding plan on storing flannel sheets for the winter. A thick flannel sheet in particular may generate too much heat for use during the summer months, so they may be stowed away in a linen closet until the temperature drops once again. Though storing your sheets can make them last longer, as they will be used less, improper storage may actually cause them to wear more quickly than they would if they were being used regularly. In order to ensure that your winter sheets are ready when you need them, follow some good storage guidelines each spring.

Always wash your sheets before you put them into storage. Not only should they be put through a regular wash cycle, they should also be carefully inspected for stains and other imperfections. While a stain that is a few days old may come out with special stain fighting detergents, those that have been allowed to set for a few months are far more stubborn. In most cases, any stains that are present when a sheet is put into storage will be present for the remainder of the life of the sheet.

Examine your sheets for any tearing or loose seams. Even a small tear can grow exponentially while a sheet is in storage. A good rule to follow is that any such tears that become apparent should be dealt with as soon as they are noticed. Though it can be difficult to find the time to mend a seam, it is far harder to darn a large hole that dominates a sheet. There is no need to invest in a sewing machine to fix these tears. In fact, a small sewing kit that may be purchased at most drugstores is more than adequate to fix most small holes.

Whenever possible, store your sheets in air tight bags or boxes. Large, plastic tubs are an easy to find and economical way to keep your bedding safe for months on end, even if they are stored in a garage or basement. In homes where space is at a premium, plastic bags that may be deflated with a vacuum will allow one to store a large volume of bedding even in the smallest corner of the closet. These containers will not only keep sheets free of dust, but will also keep them smelling freshly washed all season.

There are a number of steps that should be taken to create the optimum conditions for storing flannel sheets.

Bargain hunters will delight at the number of discounted flannel sheets that can be found when you know where to look. Even if your budget is small, it is still possible to use only high quality, high thread count sheets on each bed in your home. There are a few things to consider when looking for the lowest prices on the best sets.

Timing your shopping trip well can have a big impact on the amount that you spend. Most department stores have annual or semi-annual white sales. White sales offer deep discounts on most types of bedding, towels and other linen closet staples. These sales often kick off the fall and spring shopping season, though some locations do launch these discount-fests in the winter and summer as well. Sales are generally heavily advertised, and hopeful shoppers will often be alerted to these sales by advertisements in the newspapers or through local television commercials.

Another way to find deep discounts on flannel sheets is through a regular search of internet coupon databases. While many stores do offer e-mail mailing lists that customers may join to be alerted to sales and coupon offers, many customers would prefer to keep this information private. So, instead of entering your information, you can simply find all the coupons for which members are eligible online. Redeeming these coupons requires little more than imputing a specific code when placing an order, and most stores do not require that shoppers join any frequent customer newsletters or rewards programs. Often, these coupons will be worth as much as 30% off any item or items in the store, so the savings can add up quickly.

Consider shopping at online discount retailers. Some of the lowest prices on the web can be found on sites that sell overstock, or even slightly damaged merchandise. Overstock merchandise is typically first quality merchandise that may be a season or so old. These products are not damaged in any way, and are still in new condition with their original packaging. For even deeper discounts, consider shopping for sheets in “damaged” condition. In most cases, the damage that has occurred can be seen only in the packaging. The sheets themselves may still be in perfect condition. Many stores sell damaged merchandise for as little as 10%-20% of the original retail price.

There are a lot of places where savvy shoppers can find excellent deals on discounted <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets.

Kids flannel sheets are designed to be soft and durable, making them the perfect option for your toddler or younger child’s room. They are generally a much higher quality than the synthetic sheets found at most low cost department stores, and may be washed many times before the colors begin to fade. If you are looking for sheets for your child’s bed, consider investing in a few sets of <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets. Though the initial investment may be somewhat higher, the fact that they will need to be replaced less often will make them cheaper in the long run.

Many all cotton flannel sheets are dyed with 100% natural dyes. These organic materials are favored by parents who are worried about their children’s night time exposure to chemicals. While organics are popular, it is important that parents not confuse organic with hypoallergenic. Some children do react to natural dyes and even natural detergent. Always read labels carefully and make sure that you know the make up of everything that will be placed in the crib.

Patterns are a great way to dress up any crib or nursery. These prints may incorporate decorative elements from the nursery, whether they are found in the wallpaper, the trim or even just a stuffed animal. Bears and other animals are always popular, but more and more parents are opting for childish takes on sailboats, stripes, and polka dots. These colorful choices will enliven any nursery and are a great way to add color to a mostly white backdrop. Instead of using one sheet set at a time, mix and match fitted and flat sheets, using one that is patterned and one that is not. It will lend your crib a more eclectic feel.

The cost of the flannel sheets is not always the best way to determine their quality. The best thing that anyone can do to compare two different sets of sheets is feel them. Good flannel will be quite soft to the touch, and should be thicker than most other types of fabric. If you are looking for colors that will last, opt for sheets that are woven with dyed thread, as opposed to those that are solid pieces of fabric dyed late in the manufacturing process. When the thread itself is dyed, the colors are much more likely to remain in place, no matter how frequently the sheets are used.

Good <a href="http://flannelsheetsworld.com/kids-flannel-sheets/"title="" >kids flannel sheets are so durable that they may outlast your child’s toddler bed.

Nothing helps keep a bed more comfortable in winter than king flannel sheets. Though many flannel brands now offer thin versions for year round use, many still prefer their traditional thick flannel sheet sets when the weather gets cold. Even in a bedroom that does not get a lot of heat, the bed will remain warm, eliminating the discomfort of climbing into a cold bed in the evening. Those who have not used <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets in years will be happy to know that modern versions bear little resemblance to the scratchy versions that they had grown up with. These sheets are now incredibly soft, easy to care for and offered in a number of chic color choices.

When shopping, keep in mind that not all flannel is designed for winter use. While all may obviously be used year round if you so desire, many sheets are designed specifically so they will not heat the bed, making them appropriate for use all 12 months of the year. Warming options may be marked as heavyweight, while others may simple be sold as winter sheets. These sheets will be significantly thicker than all-weather versions, and may also come with higher price tags.

If you are shopping online, and the item description does not indicate whether or not the sheets you are considering are cold weather, simply look at the shipping weight. Higher weights mean heavier sheets, and this heaviness is generally indicative of their warming ability. Almost all internet stores list the shipping weight. It may not be obviously marked in the item description, but should be located in the product specs.

Not all flannel is made with natural materials. Some sheets may contain some polyester as well. This synthetic fiber can help prevent pilling, even after multiple washings. Additionally, it may also be used to give matte finish sheets a kind of sheen. While synthetic materials can help with durability, cotton is typically the better choice is comfort is most important. If you do choose cotton, you can help extend their life by taking care not to wash them too often or to use abrasive detergents while machine washing.

If you will be using heavyweight sheets, it may not be necessary to any additional seasonal blankets to your bed. The difference that can be felt when using king flannel sheets in the winter will be astonishing and may even allow you to turn down the thermostat overnight.

Though flannel sheets in a queen size have a reputation for being high quality, not all sheets are made to the same high standards. From brand to brand, there is a lot of variation in terms of sheet thickness, how long the colors will remain true, and how well they remain in place. If you are trying a brand for the first time, it may seem like there is little that can be done to determine how they will wear. However, there are ways that customers can estimate the quality of <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets queen sized even before leaving a store or ordering them online.

The thickness of the sheet is a good indicator of how long it will last. Thicker fabrics are, as one would expect, less likely to develop holes from washing and wear. Determining the thickness of a sheet requires little more than feeling the fabric between the fingers. When considering sealed packages or online purchases, the weight of the package can also indicate how thick the fabric is. If you are deciding between two options, also choose the one that lists the higher shipping weight.

Sheets should not only be thick, but the fabric should be tightly woven. By holding your new sheet up to the light and noting how much light shines through, you can quickly get a sense of the thread count if one is not listed. Flannel sheets should allow little light though, and one should not be able to make out definite shapes when looking though the fabric. The more the sheet obscures your vision, the better the quality.

Customer reviews are one of the surest ways to get a sense of how long a sheet set will last. Even if you prefer to shop locally, seeking out reviews through large online retailers will paint a picture of the true experience of owning a sheet set. There is no need to read hundreds of reviews for each sheet. Instead, selectively pick a few that represent the best experiences, the worst and a few in between. If the same issues are consistently mentioned, you can assume that this is something that is common to most customers who purchased these sheets. Remember, one does not need to confine their review search to sheets in the same color and pattern. As long as the sheets are the same size and manufactured under the same label, the quality should be consistent.

Knowing a few tricks when sheet shopping can take the risk of out looking for flannel sheets queen sized.

Surprisingly, or maybe not so much so, is that there is a whole world of sheets. Previously we have discussed the sordid history of sheets and the luxury of Egyptian cotton high thread count sheets. What many of us from the northern climates are probably most familiar with is the feel of the flannel sheet. I personally know some Australians who will only sleep on flannel’s if they live anywhere besides right on top of the equator! This has caused some strife for their loved ones who sweat in the middle of a Michigan summer lying on top of a fluffy flannel sheet.

Regardless, there is always a time and a place for them and they garner a special place in many of our hearts. Flannels can be made from cotton or wool or a combination of both. They are popular for their warmth but that can depend largely on thickness, but also for their soft feel. Organic cotton is grown without the use of pesticides or chemical fertilizers. Organic <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets are highly coveted in these days of protecting the environment and being healthy (read organic). Of course there is the obligatory price increase for anything organic, so beware, if your goal is being economical, then do your research!

Pilling is a particular annoyance when dealing with flannel. In fact, there may be more to their overall care then one would expect at first glance. It has been suggested that washing your sheets in white vinegar without any detergent or softener will remove pilling. It is important to only wash your flannels in warm water and do not dry with dryer sheets. After this initial wash, each additional wash you should add one half a cup or white vinegar to the wash during the rinse cycle (or in the fabric softener dispenser) to maintain a pill free flannel.

We are fans of the flannel around here. There is nothing like crawling into bed after a long day to be cuddled by softness and warmth. Many complaints that are heard about flannel sheets is that some are not warm enough while others are too warm. The response to that should always be buy many different brands and thickness that way you have a perfect pair for any level of coldness one might experience over the months of a long winter. Do not kid yourself, there are many different quality levels even for flannels and it might take some trial and error to find the right set. Be sure to pair your flannel sheets with a quality cheap mattress for those long winter nights!//

In the post “The History of Sheets” we discussed, well the history of sheets. At first you may think that you cannot possibly imagine anything more boring, but if you made it through you realized there is much more tied to their history then first imagined. This article discusses something that many of us have not had the pleasure of experiencing, Egyptian cotton sheets. Egyptian cotton sheets are synonymous with luxury and as they say “Not all sheets are created equal.”. Much of what makes the experience of having Egyptian sheets and what makes them so expensive and luxurious is thread count.

Thread count is very important, but let me back up for a minute. The main reason that sheets from Egypt are so amazing and highly priced is the cotton they are made from. The cotton is grown along the banks of the Nile River, literally along the banks. As it happens, when the water from the river recedes, it leaves amazingly rich fertile soil, unique to this region and this soil is absolutely perfect for cotton. Egyptian cotton is great because it is the longest staple of cotton in the world. The staple is the individual fiber hair of the cotton. This yields the sheets we all long to have.

Thread count is the measure of the number of yarns woven into one square inch of fabric. That is the number of threads both vertical and horizontal. There are also single play and double ply threads. Ply refers to how many threads are wrapped together. It also allows for the thickness of the sheet. The finer the thread the more that can fit into a square inch. The higher the thread count means the finer the thread being used, which in turn relates to the softness of the sheets. There are more factors to consider when buying a pair of sheets however than thread count.

Another aspect of Egyptian sheets that makes them so expensive and sought after is the quality of the finishing. How the cotton is treated is very important and the quality of the weave. Some weaves of sheets are: Percale, Flannel, Sateen, and Jersey. Percale is weaving is the finest available. It is closely woven made from both carded and combed cotton and gives it the almost silk like feel. Percale weave with Egyptian cotton is the finest of the fine and will cost you a pretty penny, but so worth it in the end.//

We all enjoy the feeling of comfort that we get when getting into a cozy bed with clean sheets. Sometimes it is the coolness of cotton on a hot summer night that makes us sigh with relaxation as we slip between the sheets. Then again, on those frigid winter evenings, when we are shivering with anticipation of crawling between a great pair of soft flannel sheets that makes us smile. Whatever your preference, I am sure we all can relate. But where did the sheet originate? Who decided that it was a good idea? How are they made?

Nobody can pinpoint when people started using sheets to make the sleeper comfortable, but the bed in some form has been around for over one thousand years. In all likelihood the material used for the first form of bed sheets was linen. Linen is made from flax. The Flax plant was woven for centuries by the Egyptians and while it was a very hard, they perfected the cultivation and weaving of the flax plant. Linen is perfect for being used as bed sheets, even more so than cotton, because of its nature to become softer with use.

Thanks to the Europeans, linen was brought to the New World. Early Americans, especially women, worked long and hard to spin flax into sheets, pillowcases, napkins, hankies, etc. Regardless of the arduous task of cutivating, harvesting and weaving the linen, Americans through several centuries continued with the linen industry. Eventually, early in the 19th century a new plant and process was discovered.

With the invention of the Cotton Gin by Eli Whitney, suddenly the difficult task of seperating the seeds from cotton became much more feasible and the cotton sheet was born. Suddenly, American plantations turned to cotton as their main industry. With the unfortunate use of slave labor, suddenly the Colonies of North America became a cotton making machine. Looms became more mechanized and cotton became the easier of the two to cultivate, that in turned made it cheaper than flax to produce and cotton became the new king of sheets.

Whether your preference is for high thread count, satin sheets or the coziness of <a href="http://www.flannelsheetsworld.com/flannel-sheets"title="" >flannel sheets, it is important to understand the history behind something that we take for granted everyday. Something that we probably never thought to wonder about it’s history. One of North America’s most important and socially disturbing parts of history can be traced back to sheets. Before you fall asleep curled up in those sheets, trying to warm yourself on that bitter cold night, that those sheets can be traced back to an important part of history, one we shouldn’t take for granted.<!--
